This has been a concern for me lately. I’ve already got sciatica and I can feel that my circulation is affected by sitting for long periods. Also, I tend to lean on my elbow or slouch in front of the computer screen. When I’m working on a website, specifically, coding, I get tension in my neck and shoulders.
I don’t know that I would want to stand all of the time but I’m willing to give it a try and perhaps use a stool or if this works out, invest in a drafting chair so that I can alternate standing and sitting while I work. I happen to have a tall table that was used at an old library that is about the right height.
I’ve read other reviews about using stand up desks and found a great site that custom builds them, StandUpDesks.com. Other’s have written that they have used a coffee table on top of their regular desk to make it good for standing in front of. The StandUpDesks site has a great FAQ section with helpful content.
Another alternative is to get up and move regularly but we often forget. So here’s an application that reminds you. StandingClock.com
It’s pretty scary to think that sitting at your desk can kill you.
UPDATE: I’ve been using my stand up desk for awhile now and I love it. I use a drafters chair and a lot of the time I’m working standing up and my cat sleeps in the chair. I don’t even notice that I”m on my feet. I shift and move around and lean on my desk at times. When I feel like it, I sit. I don’t get pain in my lower back and legs as much because I’m not sitting so long.
